The boat

Facts about The Sentosa

  • She is a fourty nine foot yacht CT 49, built in Taiwan in 1983 by the Ta Chiao shipyard, for an American couple living in Hong Kong.
  • She was bought from them by an English flight engineer working for Cathay Pacific and, eventually, shipped back to this country.   Sentosa is the veteran of two South China Seas Races and two Fastnets.
  • She is built in fibreglass with an encapsulated lead keel and generous overhangs at the bow and stern.
  • She has a teak deck and is cutter-rigged, with furler reefing to the headsail, a hanked-on staysail and a slab-reefed main.
  • She has an 80 horse power 4-cylinder Ford Lehmann diesel engine with a shaft drive to a three-bladed prop.
  • She sleeps four in some comfort!
  • She has been substantially refitted since Grahame bought her and now boasts modern electronics, including radar and a chart plotter, and a full suit of sails by Kemp.
  • With a displacement of approximately 14 tonnes, she is both stable and fast, having a hull speed of around 7.5 knots, although a good breeze will often have her nudging 9 or 10.
